What Shilajit Actually Is
Shilajit is a tar-like substance that seeps from rock in high-altitude mountain ranges, most famously the Himalayas, formed over centuries from compressed plant matter. Its two headline components are fulvic acid and a spread of trace minerals.

What the Research Measured — With Real Numbers
The most rigorous human trial on shilajit and physical performance is a 2019 study in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition by Keller, Housh, Hill, Smith, Schmidt and Johnson. It is worth understanding in detail, because it is the study most shilajit marketing gestures at without citing.
The researchers ran 63 recreationally active men through eight weeks of supplementation, split into three groups of 21: 250 mg daily, 500 mg daily, or placebo, using a standardized shilajit extract.
The measurement was how much maximal voluntary isometric contraction — peak strength — participants lost as fatigue set in.

Two things stand out. First, the 500 mg group retained noticeably more strength under fatigue than placebo. Second — and this is the part that gets skipped — the 250 mg group performed no better than placebo. Its 17.0% decline was, if anything, marginally worse than the placebo group's 16.0%.
The work came out of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and trade coverage at the time focused on the strength-retention result rather than the dose split, which is a shame, because the dose split is the useful part.
Hydroxyproline is a marker associated with collagen turnover. The 500 mg group's post-supplementation level was about 29% lower than both other groups.
The practical read: in the one well-run human trial we have, dose was the variable that decided whether anything happened at all. Half the dose produced no measurable separation from a sugar pill.
